WCBN is a radio station. It broadcasts to Ann Arbor and the surrounding communities and has been doing so for way longer than you have been alive. You will want to be a member of this UM student organization because:

We’re totally not what you probably think radio is. There’s no horrible endless NPR yacking and there are no commercials.

WCBN primarily plays music. There are a few talk programs, but for the most part, this is a music-oriented station which strives to showcase as diverse a selection as possible of artists that don’t get heard on “regular” radio. DJs pick the music. Not a computer, not a corporation, not the Program Director, and not even U of M. The individual who is live on the air at that moment is responsible for choosing the music, and WCBN has tens of thousands of vinyl records, tens of thousands of compact disks, as well as an extensive collection of other media such as 7” records and 78rpm records to choose from.

You will have access to this collection, and it will blow your mind. Not just expand it, blow it wide open. You will go wild over things you never imagined existed. The only way you will find out about those things is in our library. We can’t even begin to explain to you the extent of sound recordings that have never made it- and probably will never make it- to digital format.

WCBN is a great place to meet other like-minded students as well as resident members of the Ann Arbor community who share the same passion for unusual music that you do. You might even learn something along the way.

Still not convinced? That’s what this program is for.

The 6 O’clock Shadow (Fridays, 6pm-7pm) is your chance to come down and pick out a few records and see what it’s really like to DJ on WCBN. You don’t have to make a commitment. Just come down and check us out. We’re in the basement of the Student Activities Building. Come find our back door at the corner of Thompson and Jefferson St and call 734-763-3500 to be buzzed in. We’re at the bottom of the stairs, in the basement, like all good radio stations. See you soon!

If you would like to know how to get a show on WCBN, email training at wcbn dot org. If you want to try out DJing email 6oclockshadow at wcbn dot org, or just drop in on Friday at 6pm. You don’t need to make an appointment.

What is the 6 O'Clock Shadow? ......read this for an imaginary conversation which answers all your questions, and contact us if you have any more questions.

  • You: So what is this 6 O'Clock Shadow?
  • Us: It's a program on WCBN intended to reach out to the community, particularly U of Michigan students, to encourage you to get involved with your radio station. Once you get a chance to guest-DJ we think you'll be so enamoured with the idea that you'll want to do it more. At that point we'll direct you to our training department.
  • You: How do I find the station?
  • Us: We're in the basement of the U-M Student Activities Building. The station entrance, which will always be locked, is on the Thompson St side of the building. Once you find that door, make a simple telephone call to 734-763-3500 and ask to be buzzed in for the 6 O'Clock Shadow.
  • You: Can I bring my own music with me?
  • Us: The 6 O'Clock Shadow's intent is to get you excited about being involved with WCBN. We have a collection of records, CDs and other media which numbers in the many tens of thousands. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to show up empty-handed and ready to explore our library.
  • You: Can I bring a bunch of friends?
  • Us: WCBN policy states that a single DJ may only have three guests unless advance permission is given by the administration. Usually this permissions is only given when bands are performing on the air. The 6 O'Clock DJ may ask any guest to come back another time if his/her capacity is reached.
  • You: I don't really care about joining WCBN. I just want to play DJ. I'm going to come every week and hog all the airtime but not get further involved.
  • Us: No way. You are limited to three visits. After that we'll either steer you towards our training program, or steer you out the door.
  • You: Do I have to be a U-M student?
  • Us: No! However, since we are funded in part by the university, we especially encourage students to get involved. Students are eligible for a number of leadership positions within the organization and play a pivotal role keeping WCBN connected to U-M.
  • You: I still have more questions which you haven't anticipated.
  • Us: Please email 6oclockshadow at wcbn dot org for additional information.
  • You: I can't wait!
